October 15, 1992

Madonna holds a "Sex" party at Industria Superstudio in Manhattan to promote her upcoming book Sex. She shows up dressed like Little Bo Peep, carrying a stuffed lamb.

October 2, 1992

Madonna's racy "Erotica" video, featuring footage from the making of her Sex book, debuts on MTV. The clip, which features the sultry singer guiding viewers through increasingly sexual scenarios, airs just three times before being banned.

March 20, 1994

Madonna snags her third Razzie for Worst Actress at the 14th Golden Raspberry Awards. Her first came in 1987 for Shanghai Surprise, and the second followed in 1988 for Who's That Girl. This time around, it's her role as Rebecca Carlson in Body Of Evidence that underwhelms the judges.

February 25, 1995

Madonna's "Take A Bow" hits #1 on the Hot 100 and stays for seven weeks. The song is produced by Babyface.

October 7, 1995

Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill reaches the top of the US albums chart in its 15th week, giving the Maverick label, founded by Madonna, its first #1. Morissette is the fourth female artist to have a debut album reach #1 in the 1990s, following Paula Abdul, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton.More

Madonna gives birth to her first child, a daughter named Lourdes. The father is her personal trainer, Carlos Leon.

February 14, 1998

Madonna performs at New York nightclub the Roxy, making her first club performance in over 10 years.

September 21, 1998

Madonna enrolls her daughter, Lourdes Ciccone, at the prestigious Cheltenham Ladies College in England. Tuition at the boarding school is $22,650 a year.

November 12, 1998

Madonna draws the Best Female and the Best Album (Ray of Light) honors at the 1998 MTV Europe Music Awards in Milan.

November 1, 1998

Madonna presents director Alan Parker with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Director's Guild of Great Britain. The ceremony takes place aboard a boat on the river Thames in London.

October 7, 1999

The first and only ARTISTdirect Online Music Awards are held at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles, with winners selected in online voting. Winners include Madonna (Favorite Female Artist), Ricky Martin (Favorite Male Artist) and Nine Inch Nails (Favorite Alternative Fan Site). Chris Isaak, Cypress Hill, No Doubt and The Offspring all perform.

March 25, 2000

The Razzies aren't done with Madonna yet. After saddling her with three prizes for Worst Actress (Shanghai Surprise, Who's That Girl, Body of Evidence) and one for Worst Supporting Actress (Four Rooms) throughout her film career, the Golden Raspberry Awards names her Worst Actress of the Century. Will Smith is also a star of the evening at the 20th annual ceremony, where he wins Worst Original Song for "Wild Wild West." The movie of the same name (which he also starred in) is named Worst Picture.

Madonna gives birth to her second child, Rocco. The father is Guy Ritchie, director of the films Snatch and Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels.

After being dubbed Worst Actress of the Century a year earlier, Madonna lands her fifth Razzie for Worst Actress, for her role as Abbie Reynolds in The Next Best Thing, at the 21st Golden Raspberry Awards.

November 9, 2002

Madonna breaks The Beatles' record for most Top 10 hits on the Hot 100 when "Die Another Day" goes to #8, giving her 35 Top 10 hits on the chart.

May 10, 2003

Madonna's album American Life debuts at #1 but far underperforms her previous albums, as fans don't warm up to it (her rap in the title track is a low point). She rebounds with her next one, Confessions On A Dance Floor.

Britney Spears and Madonna share a big, juicy kiss during the opening performance of the MTV Video Music Awards. Madonna then plants one on Christina Aguilera, but we only get a glimpse of it because the director cuts to a shot of a thunderstruck Justin Timberlake in the audience.More

Madonna's first children's book is published in 42 languages in more than 100 countries. The release of The English Roses by Callaway Editions and Penguin Group, in association with various publishers around the world, is touted as the largest simultaneous worldwide release of a book in history.

Singer-songwriter Elizabeth Janie Coffey loses an action in England's High Court for copyright infringement in her claim that Madonna's song "Nothing Really Matters" infringed on a song Coffey had written earlier.

November 20, 2005

Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor album becomes her ninth UK chart-topper, while "Hung Up" starts its second week at #1 on the singles chart, her 11th on that tally.

Madonna plays a festival for the first time when she appears at Coachella.

Madonna's Hard Candy album hits #1 in America, her seventh to hit the top spot.

Madonna starts her Sticky & Sweet Tour (supporting her album Hard Candy) with a show in Cardiff, Wales. Her first excursion under her Live Nation contract, it breaks the record she set on her 2006 Confessions Tour for biggest-selling tour by a solo artist: the 85 dates earn about $408 million, second only to The Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang Tour at $558 million.

August 3, 2010

Madonna launches her "Material Girl" line of clothing, shoes, jewelry and handbags at Macy's. The line is targeted to teenage girls and based in part on some of Madonna's various looks. Assisting the 51-year-old singer with the project is her 13-year-old daughter, Lourdes.

February 5, 2012

The Super Bowl XLVI halftime show becomes the most-watched television event in history, at 118 million views. Performing artists include Madonna, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, and Cee Lo Green.

March 26, 2012

Madonna releases her dance-heavy 12th album, MDNA, the title a play on her name and also the club drug ecstacy. It goes to #1 in America, giving Madonna her eighth chart-topper.

August 7, 2012

Madonna plays a concert in Moscow during which she expresses support for the group Pussy Riot, who have been jailed for performing their song "Mother Of God, Putin's Run" in a Moscow cathedral.

December 19, 2012

Madonna gets angry at fans at a concert in Santiago, Chile, for smoking cigarettes near her against her wishes. The singer lectures the audience: "If you're going to smoke cigarettes, I'm not doing a show. You don't care about me, I don't care about you. All right? Are we going to play that game? I'm not kidding. I can't sing if you smoke." Did we mention this is out in the open air in the rain and she is about 10 feet above everybody onstage?

Madonna falls down a set of stage stairs during her performance of "Living For Love" at the Brit Awards when the cape she is wearing doesn't release properly when pulled by a dancer. She gamely gets up and finishes the performance, later reassuring fans that she is fine, and that "love really lifted me up."

October 14, 2023

After a delay while she battled a bacterial infection, Madonna begins her Celebration Tour at the O2 Arena in London. Three of her kids join her onstage, with daughter Ester doing some vogueing and son David playing guitar.
