Xania Monet Proves AI Artists Can Be Radio Stars

2025

Xania Monet makes history as the first-known AI artist to appear on a Billboard airplay chart when her viral R&B ballad "How Was I Supposed To Know?" debuts at #30 on Adult R&B Airplay - a sign that radio stations are playing AI-generated music.

Xania Monet's popularity draws controversy from critics who claim that AI artists are taking opportunities away from real ones, especially when news breaks of Monet's multimillion-dollar record deal with Hallwood Media. But there is a real person behind the fake persona. Mississippi poet Telisha Nikki Jones wrote the lyrics for "How Was I Supposed To Know?," along with the other 23 tracks on her debut Unfolded album, but used the AI music program Suno to generate the music. "Xania is an extension of me," she tells CBS Mornings in a 2025 interview. "So I look at her as a real person." Like other AI artists, Monet first gained traction on streaming sites, where the gospel tune "Let Go, Let God" also went viral, but her leap to radio marks a significant shift in the industry's acceptance of artificial intelligence and how its artists are marketed. Monet even has her own manager, Romel Murphy, whose strategy is to promote his AI client like any other artist. "If you had a, let's say, traditional, artist and were a label and marketing executive, radio would be a piece of the promotion strategy," he tells Billboard. "We're interested in bringing the music to as many people as possible."
