1984 "Do They Know It's Christmas?," the first charity single on a grand scale, is released in the UK with proceeds going to help famine victims in Ethiopia. It becomes the biggest-selling single in UK history, a record that stands until 1997 when it's overtaken by Elton John's updated version of "Candle In The Wind." The single is released in America a week later.

Chicago Bears Record the "Super Bowl Shuffle"
1985The day after taking a loss to the Miami Dolphins that keeps them from going undefeated, 10 members of the Chicago Bears record the "Super Bowl Shuffle," a rap tune where they each drop a verse about their talents. The video permeates MTV and the song spreads well beyond Chicago to become a hit single and Gold record.
With a ferocious defense and superstar Walter Payton at running back, the Bears are the most dominant team in the NFL, and they have some swagger to boot, with punky quarterback Jim McMahon and an enormous defensive tackle known as "The Refrigerator" who comes in on offense to run the ball into the endzone. A local businessman put together the "Super Bowl Shuffle" song, arranged for the video, convinced the players to do it and got a record company on board. The loss to the Dolphins puts a damper on it, but the players go ahead with the plan, recording their parts with gusto. The song is quickly released and is an immediate hit in Chicago. When MTV puts the video in hot rotation it goes national. The Bears get it together and win the rest of their games, culminating with a drubbing of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX. The song rises to #41 on the Hot 100 and sells over 500,000 copies; the video sells another 100,000. The project shows how athletes can delight fans by showing their personalities off the field - especially if they're winning.
