June 25, 2001 New York City rock band The Strokes' release their debut single, "Hard To Explain." It peaks at #16 in the UK.

April 28, 2001 Dido's song "Thank You" climbs to #3 in America after Eminem samples it for the hook of his song "Stan." The song first appeared on Dido's 1999 debut album, No Angel, which goes on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide.

February 17, 2001 Shaggy's album Hot Shot hits #1 in America, where it goes on to sell over 6 million copies. The most popular track is "It Wasn't Me," where Shaggy (in character) explains how deny it when caught cheating.

February 10, 2001 Jennifer Lopez' album J.Lo goes to #1 in America. Her movie The Wedding Planner is #1 at the box office, making her the first person with a #1 movie and album at the same time.

February 3, 2001 Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me," based on an Eddie Murphy routine about what to do when you get caught cheating, goes to #1 in America.

October 14, 2000 Five Pearl Jam bootlegs released from their European tour make the Billboard 200 albums chart, setting a record for most entries on the chart in a single week.More

September 9, 2000 Duets, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis, is released at the Toronto Film Festival. The film is a critical and box-office flop, but Paltrow and Lewis's duet cover of "Cruisin'" reaches #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

August 26, 2000 De La Soul's Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, their first album in four years, debuts at #9 on the Billboard 200 chart and #3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

July 8, 2000 "The Real Slim Shady" debuts at #1 in the UK, giving Eminem his first chart-topper on the Singles chart. He doesn't reach #1 in America until two years later with "Lose Yourself."

March 4, 2000 "Amazed" by Lonestar hits #1 in America, knocking off another first-dance wedding favorite, "I Knew I Loved You" by Savage Garden.

February 12, 2000 D'Angelo's Voodoo replaces Santana's Supernatural as the #1 album in America. It stays for two weeks before Supernatural returns to #1.

October 2, 1999 Twenty-year-old Eve hits #1 in America with her debut album, Ruff Ryders' First Lady. It's the third chart-topper of 1999 for the red-hot Ruff Ryders label, following DMX' Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood and the collaborative Ruff Ryders Ryde or Die Vol. 1. Another female rapper doesn't claim the top spot until Nicki Minaj in 2012 with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

July 10, 1999 Significant Other by Limp Bizkit supplants Millennium by Backstreet Boys at #1 on the US albums chart. The nu metal vs. boy band battles continue unabated on MTV's Total Request Live, as videos from the albums battle it out on the countdown.

January 23, 1999 Eagle-Eye Cherry's debut single, "Save Tonight," peaks at #5 on the Hot 100.

January 9, 1999 Just seven months after hitting the top spot with his debut, DMX' second album, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, goes to #1 in America.

June 6, 1998 DMX hits #1 in America with his debut album, It's Dark And Hell Is Hot. The ruff and rowdy rapper goes on a tear, with his next four albums also hitting the top.

May 30, 1998 Former 2 Live Crew leader Luther "Luke" Campbell's "Raise The Roof" peaks at #26 on the Hot 100. Also a #1 rap hit, it spawns a dance craze.More

July 19, 1997 The Fat Of The Land by The Prodigy becomes the first album by an electronic group to hit #1 in America.

June 28, 1997 Thanks to the heartwarming title track written for his daughter, Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses becomes the first contemporary Christian album to hit #1 on the Billboard 200.

December 21, 1996 Fourteen months after it was released, No Doubt's album Tragic Kingdom goes to #1 in America, where it spends nine weeks.

August 3, 1996 The Bayside Boys remix of "Macarena," originally a Spanish-language dance song from Los Del Rio, hits #1 on the Hot 100, where it stays for 14 weeks.

June 8, 1996 The Fugees' reworking of "Killing Me Softly," featuring lead vocals by Lauryn Hill, goes to #1 in the UK, where it becomes the top-selling single of 1996.

June 8, 1996 "Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham goes to #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart. She's the last female solo artist to top the chart until 2013, when Lorde claims the top spot with "Royals."

May 25, 1996 Powered by their funked-up cover of "Killing Me Softly," Fugees hit #1 in America with their second album, The Score. It ends up being the group's last album, as personal and professional differences lead to their breakup soon after.

May 11, 1996 The wonderfully titled Fairweather Johnson, the second album by Hootie & the Blowfish, debuts at #1 in America.

January 6, 1996 Eazy-E's posthumous single "Just Tah Let U Know" hits #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

June 25, 1994 With grunge still going strong, Stone Temple Pilots debut at #1 in America with their second album Purple. It holds the top spot for three weeks, dethroned by The Lion King soundtrack.

February 3, 1994 Tori Amos charts on the Hot 100 for the first time with "God" from her sophomore solo album, Under The Pink. It peaks at #72.
